Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants provide skilled therapy that facilitates a patient's/resident's highest and safest level of functional mobility. These specialists aim to restore, compensate and/or adapt for mobility deficits caused by neuromuscular and/or musculoskeletal impairments. Individualized care plans incorporate instruction and training while addressing:
- Gait training to improve ability to walk, climb stairs and safely complete community ambulation tasks
- Use of assistive devices to improve safety, functional activity tolerance and efficiency during mobility tasks
- Balance re-training to achieve safety in least restrictive living environment
- Functional therapeutic activity training to facilitate safe transfers and maneuverability around obstacles
- Modality application to facilitate movement, range of motion and manage pain and tremors
- Therapeutic exercise to maximize muscle performance, movement, strength and coordination
- Assessment/application of specialized equipment such as braces to facilitate proper body alignment, tone management and pain management
- Specialized wound care
